Abstract

This dissertation provides the first comprehensive history of the Alternative Education Resources Organization (AERO), the largest international network of alternative educators, from its inception in 1989 to 2011. Founded by Jerry Mintz, AERO emerged as a hub for diverse alternative education models, ranging from democratic and Montessori schools to holistic and virtual education. Spanning public and private sectors, AERO connected educators from numerous countries and cultural contexts, playing a central role in the global alternative education movement. The research employs a historical and transnational approach, drawing on digital archival materials, organizational publications, and sociological analyses. It situates AERO within broader pedagogical, technological, and political contexts, mapping its intellectual roots, global advocacy efforts, and influence on educational policies worldwide.
