Time-Saving at What Cost? Exploring ELA Teachers’ Adoption and Training of AI Use in Writing Classrooms

Fri, April 25, 11:40am to 1:10pm MDT (11:40am to 1:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Mile High Ballroom 2A and 3A

Abstract

This study aims to explore the ways in which P12 teachers and teacher educators have been trained to use and are using generative artificial intelligence (GAI) in writing instruction in the context of their classroom spaces. It seeks to gain insights to better understand how teachers conceptualize and implement AI use in their English language arts (ELA) classrooms and what considerations they make as they use (or do not use) GAI. While the amount of research being conducted on the topic of AI and writing has increased in the past two years (Marzuki, et al., 2023), there is scant research into the professional development being provided in using GAI in writing, especially when pertaining to rural schools.
