Abstract

Educational researchers have acknowledged the role of housing instability in affect K-12 students. Extant research, however, provides limited evidence on the policies that lead to instability, including those related to eviction, and how they translate into shifts in key outcomes like performance on standardized tests that assess mathematics knowledge. This project examines the impact of a commonly used local policy, nuisance ordinances, which have been found to encourage tenant evictions and undermine housing security. We use a novel data set from the state of Ohio and quasi-experimental methods (difference-in-differences and event study approaches) to examine how these ordinances shape the educational experiences of students and the school- and housing-based mechanisms that might explain these effects.
