Examining Dimensionality and Measurement Invariance for Second-Order Factors of Deeper Learning Opportunities and Competencies (Poster 11)

Abstract

This project draws on the Study of Deeper Learning (SDL) data, collected by the American Institutes for Research (AIR), to examine three specific research questions: (1) Do the deeper learning opportunity (DLO) and competency (DLC) constructs, respectively, display a second-order factor structure in which each of the three hypothesized second-order factors—cognitive, intrapersonal, and interpersonal—subsumes at least one first-order factor? (2) Do the second-order factor models of DLO and DLC, respectively, demonstrate measurement invariance by gender, race/ethnicity, and college generation status? and (3) Are there differences in DLOs and DLCs across gender, racial/ethnic, and college generation groups, and is the pattern of difference the same across all types of DLOs and DLCs?
