Abstract

The U.S. can only sustain itself as a democracy in the long term by taking children’s civic practices seriously, but few studies detail children’s political socialization across childhood. Punctuated by three presidential elections, this longitudinal, comparative case study is among the first of the new millennium to document contemporary children’s unfolding political awareness across time, age, and political landscapes, including how they (re)produce political rhetoric. Study findings render the complexity of contemporary U.S. children's political lives visible and illuminate how schools support or constrain children's civic practices. This work is vital in politically polarized U.S. society.
