Exploring Spaces and Practices That Foster Black Youth’s Racial and Cultural Literacies (Poster 15)

Sat, April 26, 11:40am to 1:10pm MDT (11:40am to 1:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

This poster presentation critically examines the challenges and opportunities in teaching and learning about Black history and culture. An analysis of dialogues with Black high school and college students illuminates how they navigate and interpret their experiences of learning about Black history and culture within both formal school settings and community-based contexts. The presentation explores the spaces, places, and practices that either hinder or nurture the transmission of knowledge related to Black history, culture, and experiences. It also emphasizes the environments and methods that support Black youth in developing their diasporic literacies, offering a nuanced understanding of how these literacies sustain their racial and cultural identities and their ways of knowing and being.
