Abstract

During the early twentieth century, the systemized model of educational vision Black teachers fostered and were deeply committed to, worked to rectify centuries of vilification of Blackness and Black history. The lesson they imparted inspired generations of future leaders. Through their written works, curricula, and activism, local schoolteachers performed an indispensable role in the Early Black History Movement’s public education program. They organized collectively within their communities and through national networks as they responded to crises incited by anti-Black educational principles, policies, and practices during the Jim Crow era of segregation. Together with their students, these educators imagined a possible future of Black freedom, justice, and liberation.
