Abstract

Deeper learning initiatives integrate competencies to develop students’ achievement and motivation through a supportive environmental structure. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine the influence of deeper learning programs on student motivational factors to launch career aspirations. Participants in the initial qualitative portion of the study included secondary student focus group interviews from 18 deeper learning network schools (34 focus groups) and 10-year follow-up interviews with former students (n = 20). Findings from the initial phase showed that vicarious and mastery experiences were critical in advancing students’ overall self-efficacy for learning and sense of belonging. Survey responses from secondary students (n = 1825-2,026) were utilized to further examine relationships between motivational factors. Implications will be discussed.
