Abstract

While federal and state initiatives aim to enhance post-secondary completion rates, disparities in graduation rates by race and socioeconomic status persist. This gap is pronounced for institutions with more selective admissions. Research underscores the significance of cognitive and non-cognitive preparation before college entry as a mitigator for improving college graduation rates for these demographics. Some studies contend that a deeper learning curriculum addresses cognitive preparation. Attendees of deeper learning network schools display higher academic achievement and completion rates in high school. However, their post-secondary performance is often worse or on par with non-network attendees. Exploring the types of colleges deeper learning graduates attend is essential to determine whether institutional characteristics are more salient than preparation in college completion rates.
