Fri, April 25, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Stage 1

Abstract

Educational Technology (edtech) is any technology used in an educational setting, which schools spend billions of public dollars on every year despite scholarly literature urging caution, while edtech constitutes a growing privately held industry profiting from the education system. I am using critical discourse analysis on three streams of news media in order to decipher themes conceptualizing the role and power of corporations selling edtech as actors in education. The purpose of this project is to demystify the discourse surrounding the proliferation of edtech and influence of edtech companies in education. It is necessary to understand the ramifications of the involvement of the edtech industry in influencing education policy and discourse.
