Grit, a non-cognitive trait and a significant indicator of Chinese students’ academic success can vary across ages. This study examined the measurement invariance of the Chinese Short Grit scale between middle and high school student groups in China. Data were collected through an online questionnaire, based on the Chinese Grit-S scale, from 2,749 students attending Chinese language classes (Middle School = 2,444, High School = 305), and Math classes (Middle School = 817, High School = 443) in 12 schools during the COVID-19. Our findings showed that though this scale showed the same factor structure for both middle and high school samples, students of these two groups seemed to perceive items related to grit’s two constructs, CI and PE, differently.
