This study focuses on the mechanism of learning conversations and seeks to understand the differences in conversation dynamics between chatbots powered by large language models and the more familiar human interactions. It is part of a larger investigation into using generative AI (GenAI), specifically ChatGPT, as a learning partner to help university students understand key calculus concepts during multiple-choice tests (MCTs) in a differential equations class. Although the primary goal was to assess ChatGPT's usefulness as a learning partner, we also explored differences between AI and peer learning partners. Here, we report on interviews with 11 students about their experiences using either peers or ChatGPT for MCTs.
