Abstract

This research investigated public opinion of Gifted and Talented Education (GTE) through content analysis on 86 newspaper editorials and letters to the editor from 2013-2023 using a bag-of-words approach. While recent surveys have found public opinion regarding GTE to be generally positive, this study delved into specific themes found in positive, negative, and mixed opinions. The themes identified included race, class, and labels. The researcher concludes (i) labels used to describe GT students may impact public opinion, (ii) people are able to balance conflicting opinions, and (iii) values such as social mobility and opportunity resonate across viewpoints. By aligning GTE policies with public opinion, this research can be used to enhance support for gifted programs.
