Abstract

Institutions using standardized math placement approaches (i.e. Accuplacer or ACT) are seeing an increase in developmental math enrollment, which is associated with low completion rates and high failure rates. This study examined the role that university math placement methods and placement into developmental mathematics courses have on students’ overall academic success at a four-year public minority-serving institution (MSI) in the Midwest. The study also examines the effects of math placement methods and placement into developmental education. The research demonstrates the benefits of using a holistic approach for students’ math course placement and the academic consequences of placement into development mathematics.
