Abstract

COVID-19 deeply affected international students who pursue educational opportunities in U.S. higher education. Students from mainland China, the largest international student group, incurred additional psychological burdens. However, the effects of everyday racism and hostility on mental health outcomes for Chinese students remain largely unknown and Chinese students’ mental health needs are largely unmet. Drawing on frameworks of racial literacy and mental health literacy, this research will explore Chinese students’ knowledge of race- and nationality-related feelings of minoritization and marginalization and investigate how these unconscious but racialized experiences impact their well-being. This research project will provide practical strategies for counseling and psychological services to help satisfy the mental health needs of Chinese students, especially related to their experiences of everyday racism.
