Abstract

The study aims to explore how non-native children from a multilingual society perform speech perception under High Variability Phonetic Training in Adverse Conditions (HVPT-AC). This study serves to examine the adverse effects (e.g., noise or multi-talker background) and dominant language effects on Malaysian-Chinese children's identification of the English consonant minimal pair nouns /t/-/d/ (e.g., bet – bed), /f/-/v/ (e.g., fan - van) and /r/-/l/ (e.g., war – wall), contrasting at word initial and final positions. Here we show phonetic identification accuracy under quiet and adverse conditions in Malaysian Chinese children who are dominant English and dominant Mandarin speaker.
