Creative Transcription as Embodied Care (Poster 19)

Sat, April 26, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

The current article documents an ongoing methodological exploration using embodied, arts-based methodologies to facilitate refusal in transcription. Reviewing my work using arts-based and Jeffersonian transcription on contraceptive commercials, I combine and conceptualize these analytic approaches as embodied transcription – or the use of embodied processes to produce and engage with transcripts. This article also explores ethics in transcription as lasting re/presentations of talk in interaction where I argue the importance of integrating practices of refusal in transcription. Engaging practices of refusal regarding what to include (and omit) in transcription could support equitable and mindful practices of reproducing talk.
