Drawing With Light: Exploring International Medical Learner Experiences in U.S. Academic Medical Centers through Informed Photography (Poster 18)

Sat, April 26, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

This innovative qualitative multi-methods study centers international physician learners, those born or trained in non-U.S. countries, who make up 25% of all U.S. practicing physicians. As learners, they experience persistent negative perceptions about their country of origin, culture, education, and abilities affecting their admissions to medical schools and residency training in academic medical centers. I explore factors impacting this population as they pursue medical education in the U.S. Using Grounded Theory’s approach to inquiry and analysis, with data from surveys, interviews, and modified photo-elicitation techniques, I explore learners’ diverse experiences during their unique and arduous journeys toward becoming U.S. physicians.
