Universities' Divergent Responses to COVID-19: A Social Justice Examination of Disproportionate Impacts on Marginalized Student Populations

Sun, April 27, 11:40am to 1:10pm MDT (11:40am to 1:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 302

Abstract

This study centers its investigation on the divergent responses exhibited by universities in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Firstly, enrollment concerns underscore disparities in access to higher education exacerbated by the pandemic. Many students from marginalized backgrounds already faced barriers to enrollment and retention due to financial, systemic, and social factors. The pandemic further heightened these challenges, potentially widening existing gaps in access and success. Secondly, the mental well-being of students has emerged as a critical issue. Social justice demands a consideration of how systemic inequalities impact mental health outcomes. Students from marginalized communities may lack adequate resources and support networks, exacerbating their mental health challenges during the pandemic. By centering social justice principles, institutions can better support diverse student populations, enhance mental health resources, and address systemic inequities exacerbated by COVID-19.
