Promoting AIK among Jamaica’s Teacher Educators: Opportunities and Challenges

Fri, April 25, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 3D

Abstract

Jamaica, with over 90 percent of its population of African descent, has benefitted from retentions and recursive cultural influences from Africa. However, efforts to promote African Indigenous Knowledge in the formal education system have been minimal. I will describe educators from the African Jamaican diaspora’s efforts to sensitize Jamaican Teacher educators to the value and importance of AIK through professional development sessions, and selected responses to these sessions.
