Abstract

There is relevant research describing the expectations the millennial employee may bring to the workplace, but there is a gap regarding the millennial school leader’s expectations. This basic qualitative study explored the lived experiences of fifteen millennial principals, with 1-5 years in the role, from both rural and suburban school settings in Virginia. The focus was to identify what prompted some aspiring millennial leaders to pursue and accept the role of the principalship, what motivated them to remain in that role, and what conditions might prompt them to leave the principalship. Findings from this research show that millennial principals bring a strong work ethic, seek life balance, value relationships and feedback, are intrinsically motivated to contribute, engage with their community, seek a good fit for their strengths, work collaboratively, and lead with passion for teaching and learning.
