North Carolina Association for Research in Education: Beyond Admission and Financial Aid: How a College Access Program is Demystifying The College-Going Process for Latine Students in North Carolina

Wed, April 23, 12:40 to 2:10pm MDT (12:40 to 2:10pm MDT), Hyatt Regency Denver at Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Fourth Floor, Capitol Ballroom 4

Abstract

College access programs support underrepresented communities’ pathways to post-secondary education, yet limited research investigates how these programs clarify the hidden curriculum of college. The present survey-based study examines how one program (CAP) demystifies college for Latine students. CAP and our research counter dominant, exclusionary narratives of racially and ethnically minoritized students’ postsecondary education access. CAP participants discussed insights far beyond traditionally anticipated benefits, discussed a relational network by which participants connect to uncover college’s hidden curriculum of access. Implications for research and practice are provided.
