Abstract

The higher education sector saw an extraordinary increase in union-related activity in 2022 and 2023 resulting in new unions and a slew of labor strikes (Herbert, 2023). Previous research on strike activity across multiple sectors revealed that higher numbers of disagreements between unions and their institutions before the onset of a strike can lead to increased strike duration (Harrison & Stewart, 1993). In addition, when communication between institutional leadership and union organizations is made easier—or more difficult—the duration of the strike is also affected (Ashenfelter et al., 1969). In this study, I utilize an instrumental case study approach (Stake, 1995) to investigate the relationship between institutional response to strike activity and the speed of strike resolution.
