Digital Divides: Illuminating Inequities in Access, Literacies, and Opportunities within and across Communities (Poster 11)

Abstract

This presentation examines the pervasive digital divides that hinder equitable access to digital literacies and opportunities. In today’s mediatized society, foundational literacy, numeracy, and digital skills are essential for participation in social, economic, and cultural life. Yet, many adults, especially those with limited literacy skills, face barriers that deepen societal inequities (Couldry & Hepp, 2016; Koppel & Langer, 2020). Research highlights the link between literacy and digital skill deficits, showing how these challenges contribute to exclusion in employment, housing, and civic engagement (Wicht et al., 2021; Grotlüschen et al., 2020). These inequities are further shaped by socio-cultural and economic contexts, as global disparities in educational and technological infrastructures amplify the digital divide (Koppel & Langer, 2020; Langer, forthcoming). This presentation advocates for holistic approaches to digital literacies that empower marginalized communities, promote equity, and enable active engagement in digital spaces. By exploring current research and practical interventions, it emphasizes the transformative potential of inclusive digital literacy initiatives to bridge divides and foster societal participation.
