Session Type: Symposium
Schools explain some variation in students’ outcomes, but external factors play a large role in determining the opportunities available to youth. Educational researchers have thus called for more attention to be paid to other areas that intersect with K-12, such as housing. This symposium presents four studies that focus specifically on housing instability, asking: How do policies that increase housing instability affect students’ educational outcomes and what explain these effects? How do youth impacted by instability experience homelessness and leverage social networks to receive needed resources? What are the programs that can help families and youth facing residential insecurity? Finally, how strongly linked is place of residence to school assignment across the U.S.?
