Session Type: Symposium
Drawing on the principles of middle level education and self-determination theory, this symposium highlights the findings from four research studies on middle level arts education. Working respectively in arts integration, dance, visual arts, and music, presenters will share their research findings investigating young adolescent arts learning experiences characterized by motivating learning environments that value students’ multifaceted identities and encourage student autonomy, relatedness, and competence. The purpose of this symposium is to initiate a dialogue regarding the role of arts and arts integrated learning during the young adolescent years and to consider how scholars and educators in the arts might work in consort with those in middle level education. Audience questions and discussion are encouraged as part of this symposium.
