Session Type: Working Group Roundtable
This session connects researchers focused on multilingual learners and mathematics teacher education, addressing critical challenges and dilemmas in the research studies of multilingual learners. Teacher education programs often lack adequate learning opportunities for teaching mathematics to multilingual learners, leaving many teachers feeling unprepared. We will discuss the contributions and challenges of these projects and offer networking opportunities. Three presenters will share research on teachers’ positioning on emergent bilinguals, language, and mathematical goals when planning language-responsive mathematics lessons and navigating qualitative methodological complexities when working to understand and share mathematics language routines. The session includes presentations, structured discussions, and networking to explore frameworks and methodologies addressing these challenges.
Investigating Teachers’ Positioning on Emergent Bilinguals While Implementing Mathematical Modeling in Situated PD - Jiyeong Joann Yi, Iowa State University; Jasmine Sourwine, Iowa State University
Identifying Language and Mathematical Goals when Planning Language-Responsive Mathematics Lessons - William C. Zahner, San Diego State University
