Interrogating Queer and Trans Studies in Education: Inquiries, Interruptions, Innovations

Thu, April 24, 5:25 to 6:55pm MDT (5:25 to 6:55pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 303

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium showcases three new books on queer and trans studies in the United States and Canada that challenge the normalized ways gender and sexuality are theoretically and methodologically examined in educational research. It highlights various approaches to interrogate differences, interrupt norms, and innovate methods in pursuing research, teaching, and learning with and about urban LGBTQ+ youth. Theoretically, the three papers deploy queer of color critique, critical race theory, trans care, and critical youth studies. Methodologically, they draw from ethnographic studies of young queer, trans, and gender non-conforming individuals in formal and informal educational sites. The papers in this panel offer new analytical concepts and research methods that substantively contribute to the theorizing and praxis of just educational renewal.
