Session Type: Symposium
This symposium explores the crucial role of educational institutions in shaping civic identity, behavior, and attitudes from childhood to emerging adulthood. Despite the acknowledged importance of these formative years, the mechanisms connecting educational experiences to civic engagement remain unclear. Using four unique panel datasets from the Netherlands, Germany, the United States, and Hong Kong, the symposium investigates how educational environments, social influences, and individual resources interact to influence civic participation across different life stages. Presentations cover topics such as classroom belonging, the Civic Voluntarism Model, social science learning, and social movement participation, offering insights into how diverse educational experiences shape civic development and engagement trajectories amidst social and political polarization.
