Youth Participatory Action Research to Inform and Transform: Insights From Five States

Fri, April 25, 11:40am to 1:10pm MDT (11:40am to 1:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 104

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Youth participatory action research is a community-engaged, justice-oriented research methodology. This session focuses on how university-based teams in five different states - California, Colorado, Michigan, New Jersey and New York - use YPAR for collaborative projects across an array of fields – social studies education, English education, mathematics education, public health, and the learning sciences. We pull back the curtain on these collaborations, engaging with common questions and exploring the divergent possibilities of a method of inquiry aimed at both informing and transforming. Each team will share data and analysis regarding relationality and positionality in their work, the affordances and complexities of intergenerational learning, and how YPAR is employed as a tool for meaningful change in K12 and community settings.
