Exploring Tensions in Research on Chronic Absenteeism

Fri, April 25, 3:20 to 4:50pm MDT (3:20 to 4:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 2C

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

In the past decade, districts across the country have worked to reduce sky-high rates of chronic absenteeism. Absenteeism rates rose significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and districts have developed attendance positions, policies, and plans to try to address chronic absenteeism. In this session, we show how scale-up efforts to reduce absenteeism may alienate students and families and overburden educators and staff if they are inattentive to the tensions that arise when stakeholders work to address complex contributors to chronic absenteeism. We endeavor to represent voices from those most impacted by absenteeism, including students, families, and school staff. Our session includes papers from research-practice partnerships with the Detroit and Nashville districts, and from a youth-led participatory action project in Newark.
