Session Type: Symposium
K-12 schools play a critical role in preparing young people to succeed and thrive in civic and community life. Civic learning, broadly defined to include the set of skills, knowledge, and dispositions needed to engage effectively in civic life, occurs in a variety of contexts beyond the social studies classroom. Effective approaches to civic learning require high-quality assessments that educators and other decision makers can use to monitor and improve civic learning opportunities. This session features several authors of a forthcoming edited volume on assessing civic learning opportunities and outcomes, with the aim of fostering conversations about assessment strategies that advance quality and equity of civic learning opportunities for all young people.
