Session Type: Symposium
The objective of this symposium is to examine the tensions in educational praxis relating to equity and improvement efforts in rural contexts during a time of increasing political polarization relating to democracy, pluralism, and equity. These tensions relate to the marginalized positions rural schools occupy, as well as local power dynamics. We discuss these tensions considering the strain of anti-democratic discourse and policies that have surfaced in recent years and are likely to continue. The papers represent distinct policy contexts that illuminate the ways in which equity work itself needs to be differentiated in diverse contexts and among multiple system actors including national and state policymakers, research-practice partnership collaborators, educator and leader preparation program faculty, and rural educational leaders.
