Session Type: Symposium
Despite the abundance of community and cultural wealth that Southern schools have, the need and possibility for better access to high-quality advanced science programs for rural students have been excluded from national conversations. This symposium centers Southern rural students, schools, and community partners to address this social justice issue. The papers 1) propose a culturally responsive, project-based physics and chemistry curriculum, 2) examine how Black principals navigate policy challenges for science equity, 3) highlight a partnership between two HBCUs and a PWI, and 4) investigate the generalizability of randomized control trials in educational research for equitable sampling. Together, these studies address educational inequalities in science education, offering a fresh lens on cultural consciousness, making it actionable and effective with proper measurement.
