Session Type: Symposium
This session offers recent research on vocabulary instruction and learning with multilingual and multidialectal students. Three quantitative studies will be presented, all of which recognize the rich linguistic resources students bring to their language learning and draw on asset-based pedagogical paradigms (Alim & Paris, 2017). Paper 1 focuses on vocabulary instruction in the context of informational text read-alouds in kindergarten classrooms. Paper 2 focuses on a multicomponent reading intervention in 4th and 5th grade classrooms. Paper 3 focuses on a science language intervention for middle school English as a Second Language classrooms. Themes across the three studies include the role of metalinguistic awareness and supporting all learners in language and literacy development.
