Session Type: Symposium
Various social-psychological interventions have been developed to support the success and well-being of students with marginalized identities within educational settings (Walton, 2014). While effective, these interventions can sometimes unintentionally convey a deficit-based message that it is the students themselves that need changing to adapt to the context (Covarrubias & Laiduc, 2022; Matthews et al., 2024). In contrast, an asset-based approach emphasizes individuals’ cultural identities, backgrounds, and experiences as a positive and acknowledges the unique stressors that students with marginalized identities experience (Silverman et al., 2023). This session focuses on advances being made in asset-based interventions in education (Bauer & Walton, 2024; Covarrubias & Laiduc, 2022; Silverman et al., 2023).
