Session Type: Roundtable Session
This symposium considers the possibilities and limits of schools as consciousness-raising contexts (Heberle et al., 2020; Watts & Hipolito-Delgado, 2015). This session brings together two school-based programs that leverage youth community organizing approaches and attempt to raise critical consciousness while supporting students to take action against oppression. In one case, a rural California ethnic studies program facilitated gains in students’ critical consciousness but faced limited paths for action. In the second case, an urban Colorado-based action civics program offered avenues for action but perceived limits in youths’ critical consciousness. This session unpacks the programs’ successes and shortcomings to learn across cases to best support youth in transforming contexts for justice and equity.
