Session Type: Symposium
Following the theme of AERA 2025 (research, remedy, and repair), this symposium will present studies on open education (developing and using resources with flexible licensing) in line with the SCOPE framework. SCOPE stands for Social justice, Cost, Outcomes, Perception, and Engagement and serves to organize and motivate open education research. These papers includes an examination of open educational resources used by K-12 teachers from a social justice lens focusing on the digital divide, how college faculty consider social justice in OER use, a critical policy analysis of open educational resources policies at institutions of higher education with suggestions for removing barriers, and how to use open educational resources to engaged students in critical discussions about history.
