Session Type: Symposium
The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) enforces federal civil rights law in all public schools and other institutions that receive federal funding. OCR carries out this mission by issuing policy guidance, mandating data collection, and investigating civil rights complaints filed on behalf of student groups. In recent years, efforts to promote equity in schools have encountered significant political backlash and legal challenges. This symposium builds on existing scholarship on OCR to examine how the agency’s activities contribute to its mission. By bringing together researchers and practitioners with a wide range of expertise in education policy and education law, this symposium will provide much needed insight into OCR’s role in promoting equity and opportunity in schools.
