Session Type: Symposium
Over the past few years, anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment and legislation have continued to rise. These dynamics impact research contexts and IRB practice relevant to research with LGBTQ+ youth (particularly in states with conservative legislatures). Researchers have documented navigating diverse challenges in qualitative research with LGBTQ+ youth, including hostile socio-political climates in schools and communities, IRB feedback that positions LGBTQ+ youth as vulnerable in need of psychological support, and IRB practices that jeopardize the safety and agency of LGBTQ+ youth (such as rejecting proposals for waivers for parental consent). In this symposium, we will examine these challenges and center creative solutions to these issues, such as using alternative consent/ assent processes, developing community review boards for studies, and infusing activism into research.
