“For Such a Time as This”: Advancing Racial Equity–Focused Research in Varied Sociopolitical Contexts

Fri, April 25, 3:20 to 4:50pm MDT (3:20 to 4:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 102

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium features five presentations that discuss strategies for advancing research that promotes racial equity for Black students in postsecondary STEM within controversial and anti-Black sociopolitical contexts. As a result of a shared collaborative, NSF-funded racial equity project, each research site (i.e., Tennessee, Texas, North Carolina, Georgia, and the DMV) employs the same research design. This design is conceptually rooted in Black liberatory ideologies. Challenges, Workarounds, and “Ten Toes Down” responses employed by each group, and the associated logics for implementing a practice, are shared. Implications proffer tangible strategies for educational scholars and practitioners who desire to drive racial equity in lieu of adversarial, anti-democratic politics.
