Session Abstract 105
Each paper in this session examines how critical literacies can be used to heal and transform girls’ and non-binary youth’s schools and communities. In these instances, reading and writing are forms of remedy and repair. The first paper draws on testimonios and pláticas of five Latina youth writers. The second paper traces how one Black girl-activist draws from Black feminism and intersectionality to call out sexual harassment at school, reclaiming #MeToo for Black girls. The final paper draws on critical content analysis and feminist theory to interrogate young adult literature containing themes of restorative justice, from which girls’ and non-binary voices have largely been absent.
