Session Type: Symposium
Body weight and size are complex issues in K-20 education, with few spaces available for critical analysis of societal messages about fatness and body inclusivity. The absence of these sanctuary spaces perpetuates social inequities within educational institutions. This symposium aims to honor and affirm the fat body, supporting teachers in helping students critically analyze messages about body size and counter fat shaming (Friedman et al., 2019; Patterson-Faye, 2016; Taylor & Oluo, 2021). By focusing on the intersection of race, class, disability, age, sexualities, and gender identity, this symposium seeks to foster an inclusive educational environment that respects and values all body types.
