Session Type: Symposium
This symposium presents four studies examining the long-term impacts of the One Village One Preschool (OVOP) program, China's largest early childhood education initiative, which has provided free ECE services to over 300,000 children in rural areas. Research demonstrates OVOP's significant positive effects on high school and junior high students' academic achievement, university enrollment, non-cognitive skills, and social-emotional competence. The program shows particular benefits for disadvantaged children, promoting educational equity. Additionally, a randomized controlled trial of a low-cost teacher intervention reveals long-term improvements in rural preschool teaching quality. These studies provide compelling evidence for the lasting benefits of early childhood education in resource-constrained settings, offering valuable insights for policymakers on promoting equitable educational opportunities and socio-economic development in rural areas.
