Dismantling Dis-Abling Systems of Oppression

Sat, April 26, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 303

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Education systems are rooted in systems of oppression, especially for those who are further marginalized by intersections of race, gender, ethnicity, multi-lingual skills, disability, etc. This symposium spotlights qualitative and quantitative research studies focused on key structures, policies, and practices creating or perpetuating systemic oppression. Research and case studies on identifying disparities, and dismantling and redirecting these structures will be shared. Theoretical frameworks include DisCrit (Disability Studies and Critical Race Theory), critical disability raciolinguistics, implementation and improvement science, and cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT). Embedded within larger equity work, these studies address themes of education disparity and inclusive education while highlighting intersecting identities and the need for multi-level, multi-year foci on systemic and structural barriers to dismantle the structures of oppression.
