Session Type: Symposium
Drawing on qualitative and mixed research methods, the symposium will examine the factors that both enable and constrain Black girls and women’s abilities to learn and thrive across time, age, and space. To do so, we explore the role of institutions and systems, such as the juvenile legal system, informal learning environments, public schools, and institutions of higher education, in creating the conditions for Black girls and women to thrive as learners, students, professionals, and people. While it is one thing to acknowledge these histories of harm, it is another to use them as a compass for examining the state of Black girls and women and advocating for more just, caring, and equitable institutions and systems.
