Session Type: Symposium
Four research teams detail the possibilities of mobilizing interdisciplinarity to engage with/in progressive politics. Drawing from projects across North America–a tri–coastal climate collective of children, a public elementary social studies classroom, a high school civics classroom, and a youth arts fellowship program–the authors resituate conversations on critical social issues. Instead of questioning if or where progressive politics fit into the curriculum, the authors showcase how children, youth, and teachers challenge dominant (hi)stories through interdisciplinarity. Individually, teams promote children, youth, and teachers as capable of (and interested in) using arts, literacies, science, and social studies to cultivate alternative spaces for political action. Together, they showcase how disrupting disciplinary silos might forward more just social futures in the present.
