Resistance to Gentrification and Housing Insecurity: Centering the Situated Knowledge of Youth, Parents, and Community-Based Educational Spaces

Fri, April 25, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 106

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Gentrification and housing insecurity have grown in scope and complexity, holding critical implications for the lives of minoritized and low-income youth, families, and the broader social fabric of their neighborhoods and schools. Drawing on critical theories and the situated knowledge and resistance by young people, parents, and community-based educational spaces to gentrification and housing insecurity, this symposium calls for education scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to expand their understanding of how gentrification and housing insecurity shapes formal and informal educational spaces, and the lives of students, families, and educators. We suggest a deeper interrogation of the intersections of race, class, power, and place, alongside those engaging in ongoing efforts to empower and stay rooted in their communities.
