Reflecting on How Journal Editorial Spaces Can Serve as Critical Mentoring Spaces

Fri, April 25, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 703

Session Type: Workshop

Abstract

Traditionally, journal editors are charged with increasing journal visibility, recruiting reviewers for manuscripts, upholding ethics, and safeguarding the quality of the journal. Although we operate within these standards and professional practices, we also recognize that publishing remains an exclusive and elusive process. While operating within the professional standards of what is expected for a peer review, we move beyond the traditional transactional exchanges that might frame a review process to center access and equity for pre-tenured faculty. While the term “blind peer review” signals that anonymity will neutralize any potential bias from happening in the review, we also know that it matters how much a reviewer invests in providing substantive feedback to assist a manuscript in becoming published.
