Reconfiguring University-District Roles in Teacher Preparation: Residency Partnerships and Equitable Workforce Pathways

Sun, April 27, 11:40am to 1:10pm MDT (11:40am to 1:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 2H

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Teacher residency programs aim to meet multiple goals: providing accessible and high-quality preparation; establishing pipelines of qualified teachers; and meeting hiring needs in hard to staff subjects and schools. Research suggests that residency implementation improves teacher quality and retention, enhances student learning, and shifts institutional arrangements in teacher workforce pathways.

This symposium presents four papers on features and implementation of teacher residency programs, drawn from studies conducted across California and Texas. The symposium will provide an overview of key features of high-quality teacher residencies, followed by cross-context examples and analyses of how residencies have reshaped institutional roles in resident recruitment and support, clinical experiences, and funding sources.
